Nils Muižnieks, Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, has urged European authorities to fight racist extremism with determination and uphold human rights.

In his latest Human Rights Comment, Mr. Muižnieks says Europe has been experiencing a worrying intensification of activities of racist extremist organisations, including political parties.

Some people are spreading rumours that the government of Italy has suspended the plan toregularise illegal immigrant workers. The people behind such rumours claim that other EU countries have forced Italy to reconsider its decision to allow employers of illegal immigrants to regularise their workers.

From now on employers of illegal immigrants in Italy will face heavy sanctions under the Legislative Decree No. 109 of 16th July 2012, which enters into force today.

The Decree adopts the Directive 2009/52/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 18 June 2009 providing for minimum standards on sanctions and measures against employers of illegally staying third-country nationals.

Immigration Minister Damian Green has announced that the price of a standard UK passport will be reduced by £5 from this autumn.

From 3rd September 2012, the standard adult passport fee will be reduced by almost seven per cent from £77.50 to £72.50.
